Some
of the most commonly asked questions regarding The Fusion
Kickboxing are listed below..
-------
Q
- What is Kickboxing and what does it entail?
A
- Kickboxing is a Martial Art which has stemmed from Karate,
Thai boxing and Boxing. Westerners combined and tweaked these
traditional styles typically used for self defence and combat
and turned them into a less brutal and more practical sport
or workout.
The
sport involves scoring points on your opponent using various
kicks, punches and blocks; techniques which are also effective
in real-life situations or self defence, but generally are
used for keeping fit by making use of its high intensity,
cardio workout.
-------
Q
- What do the lessons involve?
A
- Classes usually begin with a warm-up followed by some stretching.
You may then be given different exercises to perform such
as press-ups or squats although they could be thrown in at
any time during the class. Kicks, punches and blocks will
be practiced either in fresh air, or on various pieces of
equipment, maybe even your partner. Sparring will also play
a big part in some lessons (if you choose) and will always
be done in a controlled manner under constant supervision.
Kickboxing requires a degree of strength and fitness which
is built up over time through training at the classes. No
lesson is ever the same although the nature of any martial
art is repetitiveness.
-------
Q
- Do you have to be fit or flexible before you join?
A
- Not at all. The instructor's job is to bring out the best
in everyone. At first lessons will be easy to moderate as
you build up your stamina and physical ability. As you improve
the difficulty will be gradually increased. Students are only
pushed to their own limits and not somebody else's. For advice
on training look at TRAINING
TIPS.
-------
Q
- What is the age criteria for training?
A
- The youngest The Fusion will take students is 7 years old.
We have mixed as well as separate adult and child classes.
Children any younger than 7 can be quite demanding and require
constant supervision from the instructor, thus effecting the
quality of tuition other students receive.
The oldest we will take on students is purely up to the individual.
If they are capable then they can train.
-------
Q
- Will I have to spar?
A-
Not necessarly and certainly not until you are confident enough
in doing so. You will be paired up with opponents of equal
ability and both will be wearing full protective equipment.
Contact is light and sparring sessions are always supervised.
Is is extremely rare that anybody picks up any kind of injury
through sparring.
You
can choose the non-sparring option when you join and alternative
drills can be performed instead. Students will be able to
change this option at a later date if they wish to do so.
-------
Q
- What equipment will I need and when should I buy it?
A
- Initially none, just your club suit. When the time comes
you will need feet pads, shin guards, gloves, a head guard
and a gum shield. Men will also need a groin guard and ladies
a chest protector.
You
will certainly need it by the time your ready to take your
first grading (4-6 months) but you can purchase it sooner
if you wish.
It
is advised that you speak with the class instructor before
you purchase any items for sparring as there is a strict criteria.
Equipment can be purchased via the FUSION
SHOP.
-------
Q
- Is Kickboxing an expensive hobby?
A
- After the initial outlay for joining and protective equipment,
your only other costs at the club would be your monthly tuition
(which is dependent on how often you train) and gradings.
-------
Q
- How do I pay for lessons?
A
- Typically lessons are paid for one month in advance via
Standing Order. The first month of training will have to be
paid in cash until the Standing Order is active. Lessons cannot
be paid for in cash or individually, unless
they are in excess of the pre-paid lessons that week. ie You
pre-paid for two lessons per week but wish to train at a third,
you would then pay cash at the third lesson.
-------
Q
- What happens If I miss a lesson, do I get a refund?
A
- Unfortunately not. You will have the option of training
at any of the other lessons that week, to make up for it.
-------
Q
- How often are gradings?
A
- Grading's are on average every 4-6 months but it also depends
on the students attendance and on how well they are progressing.
A Black belt should be your ultimate goal and will come no
sooner than 5 years. Don't be tempted by clubs offering you
a 'guaranteed Black belt'. You should earn your grade and
not buy it!
-------
Q
- Can I wear my kit from another club?
A
- Only until you receive your new one. The club suit is a
uniform and it is important that full kit is always worn for
lessons in a good clean condition. It may also be worth considering
PURCHASING
AN EXTRA SUIT
to wear, just in case the other is dirty.
-------
Q
- Can I wear my Belt from another club?
A
- Unfortunately not. A belt is only a mark of how you are
progressing at your present club. You will find that all clubs
have different syllabuses and probably even different coloured
belts from what you are used to. Even if it is the same martial
art. For example, some kickboxing clubs may practice using
knees, elbows, low kicks, sweeps and even take downs where
others may not.
However, after six months of training at The Fusion you will
be graded to our syllabus and could soon have your grade (or
equivalent) back.
-------
Q
- Can I use my licence from another club?
A
- Only if it's a Shorai M.A.I licence. This is the association
that The Fusion is affiliated to. Any other type of licence
would not insure with The Fusion or any of its instructors.
